The growth rate in online shopping has slowed for the first time since eCommerce solution became available to retailers. However growth was still 8% from September 2008 to 2009.
Clothes and electrical stores are suffering the most, as sign that consumers are cutting back on non-essentials during the credit crunch. Retailers are expecting to see much stronger growth again next year, and also in he run up to Christmas. When times are hard consumers ofter cut back on spending throughout the year so that they can have an extra special Christmas.
One theory is that good weather resulted in many would be Internet shoppers going into to town to browse instead. Looks like we could be in for a wet autumn, so online retailers should be pleased.
